Nelly

Nelly – Square Motif

This is an interesting design in that it is two pretty squares put together with contrasting thread to make a rather ugly doily or placemat. I think the motifs are better suited to being doilies, or put together as a tablecloth or table runner, but not with contrasting thread. Size: 33 to 33 cm. Materials: Size 120 crochet thread, some black thread of the same strength and size 2/0 knitting needles.

The placemat is composed of 4 larger octagonal pieces, a small square and 4 triangle shapes. You start with the small square, which you work according to Chart A. On a cast on of 4 stitches you knit the pattern set 4 times in the round. The intermediate rounds are knitted on the right. After the 26th round, crochet the stitches with black yarn. Always gather the number of stitches indicated in the last round with 1 single crochet and crochet 11 chain stitches in between. At the cross you crochet 2 single crochets separated by 11 chain stitches into the joined sts.

The octagonal parts are worked on a cast-on of 8 stitches according to Chart B. The pattern set is knitted 8 times in the round; knit the middle row After the 58th round, the sts are crocheted off as described for the square. The parts are looped onto the small square with one side each, as well as the second octagon on the first, the third on the second, the fourth on the third and first, as can be seen in the illustration. The looping is done by working 1 single crochet in the corresponding loop of the other part at the relevant point, after having crocheted the first 5 chain stitches of the arch, then crocheting 5 chain stitches again, combining the knitting patterns indicated and so on. The double arches at the corners must always meet and are looped as shown in the illustration. Finally, work the small triangular shapes according to chart A, but cast on 3 stitches and repeat the pattern set only 3 times. The triangles are inserted in the appropriate places when crocheting. When you have crocheted all parts together, you work one more loop row. in black around the whole blanket, 11 chain stitches, 1 single crochet in each loop, in the corner loops 2 single crochets separated by 11 chain stitches. The outer end is formed by a similar round in white. Finally, the ceiling is carefully stretched.
