Krokus

Size: oval, 70 x 45 cm. The oval shape is produced by knitting a center square, two wings and then an outer border. Materials: crochet threat #120, plus small amounts of #80 and #50 crochet thread. Size 3/0 knitting needles [Old German sizes.]

Instructions: With the size #120 thread, cast on 4 sts, join into the round and work according to chart A, repeating the chart 4 times per round. Uncharted rounds are worked in plain knit except for rounds 78-81 which are purled.

Place the stitches of the second and fourth repeats onto stitch holders. Knit chart B across the 72 live stitches of the first repeat. Knit flat, purl the return rows. Repeat across the 72 live stitches of the third repeat.

Having finished both side parts after round 90, pick up stitches around the entire piece as follows:

  • 4 live stitches from one end of the oval,
  • 90 stitches from the edge of part B,
  • 72 live stitches from the center square,
  • 90 stitches from the edge of the next part B,
  • and repeat along the second side: 4/90/72/90.

(512 stitches.) Place a marker at the end of the round. Joining #80 thread, knit four purl rounds and one knit round. Change back to size #120 thread. Knit chart C, repeating the pattern 16 times per round. Work rounds 47 - 52 with size #50 thread. Also, purl rounds 47 – 51 and knit round 52. Use size #120 thread for the remainder of the piece. After round 80, combine groups of stitches with single crochet as indicated in the last round, and chain 15 between the single crochets. Block carefully.
