Kreise und Sechsecke

Size: diameter 29 (45) cm from size 100 thread, 40 (55) cm from size 40 thread. Materials: 8-12g #100 fine crochet cotton with 2mm needles or 20-50g #40 crochet cotton with 2.5mm needles. 2 sets of dpns will be helpful. 1 circular knitting needle 8 or 100cm long, 0.6-1mm crochet hook.

Instructions per Annagret: The center of this doily is crocheted.

  • CO 6 ch, make 1 sl st to form a circle.
  • Rd 1: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), (1ch, 1dc)7x, 1ch, 1 sl st to close the round. (8 dc in total of which the first is 3ch)
  • Rd 2: ch2 (counts as first sc) work 1 sc into each ch or dc, respectively. (16 sc in total, of which the first are 2 ch)
  • Rd 3: ch2 (counts as first sc), then work another (!) 16 sc, which means there is 1 increase. Close the round.
  • Now the knitting part will be set up: Put the last crochet loop onto a knitting needle, then pick up and knit from the back loops another 17 sts.

Note:If you don’t want to crochet the center, Raveler TiaJudy has developed an elegant way to get there with knitting.

For the small round doily, repeat the chart 6 times per rd up to rd 41 (rds. 39-41 are the same as rds 33-35). Now work 4 rds plain knit, increasing after the 2nd st and then 5times after 56 sts each by ktbl into the bar between 2 sts of the preceding row for a total of 342 sts.

Work the border according to the chart, 38 repeats per rd. Crochet off after rd 6, working 7 (9) chain sts between the sc’s. Join 2 chain loops each when blocking, cf. photo. This item can be blocked as a hexagon, taking care that the corners meet the spikes of the pattern.

The larger circle is worked as follows: Work like the smaller one up to rd 44 (rds 39-44 are the same as 33-38). Then work 4 rds plain purl. From rd 49 on there will be 12 repeats per round. In rd 63 work 13 sts from the triple yarnovers (alternate 1k, 1p). Continue up to rd 68 (a knit round), then crochet off, gathering 11times 4 sts, 1 time 3 sts per repeat into 1 sc, working 9 chain sts in between (3 chains only after and before the 3 gathered sts).

As always, many thanks to Annagret!
