FdA 754
Materials: About ten to twelve 20g balls of 6-ply crochet thread size 20, size 2 knitting needles, size 8 crochet hook. The cloth can also be knitted with size 50 crochet thread, in which case it will measure 85 cm by 115 cm.
Chart A: Cast on 8 stitches—2 stitches onto each of the 4 needles—and knit in the round using the 5th needle. Repeat the pattern for each round once per needle, for a total of 4 repeats per round. Knit according to Diagram A. Rounds that are not explicitly charted (the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) are to be knitted entirely in stockinette stitch (knit every stitch). When two yarn-overs appear consecutively in an even-numbered round, knit the first yarn-over and purl the second. Read the diagram from bottom to top and from right to left. The numbers at the beginning of the diagram indicate the round numbers, while the numbers in the middle of the diagram indicate the number of stitches to be knitted. The empty squares in the chart are merely placeholders; they serve to define the pattern design and make the chart easier to read. In the 6th round, work 14 stitches from the 3 yarn-overs of the previous round by alternating between knitting 1 stitch and purling 1 stitch until you have created 14 stitches. After the 58th round, transfer the 57 stitches from each of the 4 needles onto a spare needle or stitch holder, and leave these stitches on hold. Knit 9 additional squares in the exact same manner. Next, assemble the squares according to the layout provided in the pattern, joining them by sewing the stitches together stitch-by-stitch. Along the inner edge, there will be a total of 114 stitches for the long side and 57 stitches for the short side. Along the outer edge, there will be 228 stitches for the long side and 171 stitches for the short side.
Chart B: First, knit the inner side according to Diagram B. On the 1st and 3rd needles, knit the stitches located before the bold line; on the 2nd and 4th needles, knit the stitches located after the bold line. Knit the unindicated rounds in purl, just like the preceding rounds, to form stripes. Starting from the 3rd round, shift the pattern 1 stitch to the right, and repeat this shift on every odd-numbered round. After the 57th round, sew together the remaining stitches along each long edge—working stitch by stitch—then cut the yarn.
Charts C and D: Next, begin the outer border. On the 1st and 3rd needles (228 stitches), knit the section of Chart C located *before* the bold line; on the 2nd and 4th needles (171 stitches), knit the section located *after* the bold line of Chart C. After Round 74, knit the lace border according to Chart D. Repeat this sequence 10 times on the 1st and 3rd needles, and 8 times on the 2nd and 4th needles. In Round 2, knit 13 stitches into the triple yarn-overs from the previous round. Repeat the section enclosed within the bold lines ten times per repeat. After Round 26, finish the piece using a crochet hook. Crochet together the number of stitches indicated at the top of the chart, and work 10 chain stitches between each group of stitches crocheted together. Block the doily using small copper tacks, dampen it with a cooked starch solution, and allow it to dry while pinned in place.
