FdA 676
Tablecloth with a 16-motif lace rectangle set into a linen center with a wide linen border. Length: 102 cm (6 motifs), width: 68 cm (4 motifs). Materials: 100 g size 20 crochet thread and size 1.5 mm knitting needles. The size of the linen center is calculated after the 16 border motifs are completed, grafted together and blocked.
Instructions: Cast on 8 stitches and join into a round. Repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Knit the rounds not shown on the chart. In round 6, increase the three yarnovers to 11 stitches, alternating knit and purl stitches. After the last round, place the stitches on waste yarn. Knit 15 more motifs the same way.
Lay out the squares to form the border of 6 motifs on the long sides and 4 motifs on the short sides of a rectangle. Graft together stitch by stitch the sides that touch another square, then bind off the inside and outside edges of the entire border with a crochet hook. Single crochet into an edge stitch, then chain 1, and repeat around the entire inside and outside edges.
Starch and block the lace border, allow to dry. Then arrange the lace on top of a rectangle of linen and stitch the lace to the linen around the inside edge of the lace. Trim the linen on the underside, roll the edge and hem. Attach a strip of linen along the outside edge of the lace, all four sides. Make a 10cm hem around the outside. In other words, the knitted lace is inset into the tablecloth, with a linen center and wide linen edge with a wide hem. The measurements are not given for the outer linen panels, except for the width of the hem.
Note: I think this is a Herbert Niebling pattern because of the mesh background typical of many of his patterns.
