Un Cadre Ensoleillé (FdA 596)
Large lace edging consisting of 16 individual motifs joined in a round and stitched to a linen or batiste center. Many thanks to Annagret for rewriting the instructions. Size: around 130 cm diameter; each motif measures about 36 cm in height and 30 cm in width. Materials: 150g crochet cotton #50, size 1.5mm knitting needles, a dozen or more stitch holders.
Instructions: Cast on 6 stitches and join into a round.. Work according to chart A up to and including round 36, repeating the chart 6 times per round. Not-charted (even) rounds are to be worked in plain knit. Two or more adjacent yarnovers will be worked in alternating knits and purls until the desired number of stitches is reached.
For rounds 37-58, repeat the part before the bold line 5 times per needle, followed by the part after that line once. This latter part will later form the stem and the leaves of the respective flower. After completion of round 58 (299 stitches), put the first 245 stitches on hold [preferably on a length of waste yarn] and work chart B in rows back and forth across the remaining 54 stitches. Fasten off after 56 rows. Make 15 more motifs.
Arrange those 16 motifs in a circle, leaves parts pointing inside. Graft the first and last 49 stitches of each motif to the adjacent one. You will be left with 147 stitches on the outside of each motif for working the outer edge, 2352 stitches total. Transfer these stitches to a circular needle and work round 59 of chart A, followed by round 60 in plain knit. Knit 2 more stitches onto the right needle, then crochet off, gathering as many stitches as indicated on the chart into 1 single crochet. Chain 9 stitches in between. Block carefully, taking care of obtaining a neatly smooth inner edge of the 16 triangular parts, which will be easy to sew. On the outside, it may be easier to gather 2 loops into one on blocking. Starch as desired and let dry. Sew a piece of fine linen or batiste to the inside.
