FdA 141 Couvre Lit au Tricot d'Art

This is a huge project. I will be surprised if someone knits it! It is a very large bedspread or coverlet, knit in several parts. The first section, A, is very large and I had to break up A Part One and A Part Two into quite a few smaller charts so they can be printed on regular letter paper. I suggest printing out all the charts full-size, then tape them together. Pay attention to the names of the charts, as well as the round and column numbers. I have also included A Part One and A Part Two as complete charts for reference when putting the smaller charts together. Also, I'm not entirely sure about the instructions. Annagret translated the instructions for me and modernized them. Still, there are a couple of places with confusing instructions. I tried to validate all the rounds/rows, stitches used and stitches produced, but there may still be a couple of mistakes.

Size: the center square is 120 x 120 cm, which would make a nice tablecloth by itself. The entire bedspread measures 255 x 220 cm. The width of the inner band is 30 cm and the corner squares for the inner band measure 30 x 30 cm. The outer band, the edging, measures 33 cm in width. There are a few extra rounds of purl and eyelet that are not shown on the charts. Those increase the size to approximately 255 cm by 220 cm.

Materials: 1500g of rayon, size 3 knitting needles. The instructions say to start on double-pointed needles, but mostly it requires circular needles and lots of stitch markers. The weight/yardage of the rayon isn't specified so use thread or yarn appropriate to the size of the needles. The size of the needles isn't clear, presumably it is 3mm.

Cast on 8 stitches and join into a round. Knit according to Chart A, Part One. Repeat the pattern 8 times per round. From round 41, repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Rounds not shown on the charts are knitted. After round 127, begin Part Two of Chart A. At the end of this chart, you should have 1140 stitches. Next with double thread, purl three rounds, work one round in eyelet stitch (k2tog, yo), and then purl three more rounds. At the same time, add a yarnover at each corner in purl rounds 1, 3, 5, and 7 to make sharp corners. The corner is above a large leaf (stitch 190?). Divide stitches onto four circulars (!) to form a square.

The next section (Chart B) is knitted flat over one side of the blanket at a time. Repeat the chart 5 times, purl the return rows. After row 74, knit six rows in garter stitch with double thread. Put the stitches on hold. Repeat on each of the remaining sides of the blanket.

Work the 4 corner squares separately according to chart C. CO 8 st and distribute onto 4 dpns, repeat the chart twice per needle, i.e. 8 times per rd. Uncharted rows are worked plain knit. After rd 40, work row 41 separately in rows, i.e. the four corners are worked separately. Use 48sts each per corner. Sew the corner squares to their respective places.

Now return to the sts on hold. There will be 392 sts per side. Work 3 sides (1176 sts) according to chart D, repeating the chart 14 times per needle. At the 2 corners, work another repeat of the sts between the bold lines, to obtain 2 neighboring leaves at the corners. Uncharted rows are worked in plain purl. After 80 rows, crochet off all four sides, gathering 4 sts each into 1 sc, working 12 chain sts in between points.

Each part of this work could be blocked separately if so desired. When the whole item is completed, block (again), humidify and let dry.

Remember:

  • Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
  • I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
  • Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
