Barock
UPDATE: Two dedicated Niebling fans and Ravelers pointed out some errors in my charts. I found that one error was actually in the original pattern but the other dozen or so errors were mine! Thanks to these ever-vigilant Ravelers who help me keep these patterns correct. Lordy, what would I do without them? So, if you downloaded these charts before October 12, 2024, delete those and download these updated charts below.
One of several patterns by Niebling named “Barock” (Baroque) including a set of three doilies and an unusual – for Niebling - doily with human figures. This one is an elaborate edging that frames a square of silk fabric. Size: 63cm square. Materials: 30g very fine crochet thread size 100 or sewing silk [very fine thread, anyway], size 1.5 mm knitting needles and a 45x45cm square of silk fabric.
Instructions: To make the corners, cast on 8 sts, work in rows according to charts up to row 86 (a wrong side row.) Repeat the pattern twice per row. Purl the return rows, working k1, p1 into double yarnovers. After finishing row 86, place stitches on a holder or waste yarn. Make 4 separate corners.
After row 86, join all 4 pieces into one and begin working in the round, repeating the chart 8 times per round up to round 90. From round 91, knit the entire pattern and then knit it again, up to the bold line. Repeat this 4 times per round. Note that the chart for this part is divided into right and left halves. It might help to print them and tape them together to see the continuity of each line.
Use a crochet hook to make the decreases in round 119: gather the number of stitches to be decreased into one single crochet stitch. Chain 9 or so stitches between the single crochet stitches. The instructions don’t specify the number of chain stitches, so chain however many seems right to you. Block the outside first, and then block the inside edge smoothly, pulling the points to make the shape in the photograph. Starch lightly, let dry. Baste to the silk fabric, and then sew in place using size 50 thread. Trim excess fabric neatly from the wrong side.
