White yarn of the thinnest quality is used for the table.
First crochet around the fabric, 136 double crochets on each side and 1 double crochet in each corner. Pick up 1 knitting stitch in each double crochet and knit on thin needles according to the chart. Repeat the pattern 8 times on each side. In the corners, knit as follows:
Round 3: increase corner stitches to 3.
Round 4: knit.
Round 5: ktbl, yo, ktbl x 2.
Round 6: knit.
From then on, knit 4 leaves in each corner, instead of 3 leaves per repeat as shown on the chart.
Knit all rounds not shown on the chart. Where there are double yarnovers, in the next rount knit the first loop and purl the second loop. After Round 24, crochet off the stitches by joining together with 1 double crochet as many knitting stitches as the numbers in the grid pattern show, and crochet 14 chain stitches after each double crochet. Lightly starch the handkerchief and lace, iron the center and block the lace edges.
