Streublumen

Another obscure Herbert Niebling pattern, originally published in Meyers Handarbeitsheft, Nr. 36 Kunststricken. I can't see that it has ever been reprinted, and there are no projects for it in Ravelry's database. The original pattern calls for 50 g of DMC crochet yarn size 100, and knitting needles size 0 (I imagine in old German sizes.) The square doily is 40 cm per side (about 16 inches on each side.)

Chart A: Cast on 4 stitches, join in a round and repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Knit the unnumbered rounds, and where there are double YOs, knit the first loop and purl the second loop on the next round. After the 10th round knit back and forth over each set of patterns as shown in Chart D. Purl the return rows. Make four of these squares total.

Then make 4 squares according to Chart C. Cast on 4 stitches, join in a round and repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Knit the unnumbered rounds, and where there are double YOs, knit the first loop and purl the second loop on the next round. After the 10th round knit back and forth over each set of patterns as shown in Chart D. Start the first row of Chart D where the red arrow indicates on Chart C. Purl the return rows.

Center motif of the doily: Chart B. Cast on 4 stitches, join in a round and repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Knit the unnumbered rounds, and where there are double YOs, knit the first loop and purl the second loop on the next round. After the 38th round, knit Chart E back and forth over each repeat of Chart B. Purl the return rows.

When all nine squares are finished, they are loosely sewn together. Motif B is in the middle, Chart A motifs at the four corners and Chart C squares are placed in between. Sew the seams with mattress stitches. Pick up 228 stitches on each side. Knit 12 rounds. On every other round, increase three stitches from one stitch on each corner.

Bind off with a crochet hook. Decrease 5 stitches with one single crochet, and chain 12 between the decreases. Join the last ch12 to the first decrease. Tie off, cut the yarn or thread and weave in the ends.

Remember:

  • Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
  • I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
  • Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
