The pattern calls for silk rep fabric to make the center and 20 g of same-colored fine crochet rayon and size 7/0 knitting needles. Silk rep has a slight ribbed texture and is easy to sew. The pattern doesn't say how much fabric to use, but gives the size as 48 cm in diameter including the 7-cm lace border. So, the diameter minus 2x7 equals 34 cm. Add enough extra for seam allowance, meaning you need at least a 36-cm in diameter circle of silk fabric. Look at the schematic to see how the circle is divided into 8 repeats. Cut along the outside black lines to create the scalloped shape. Then create the edge by crocheting around the outside, 42 stitches for each repeat (336 total). Pick up 336 stitches from the crochet border, with knitting needles. Purl two rounds. Then proceed with the chart, repeating the design 8 times per round.

After that somewhat complicated beginning, the chart is fairly easy. Only odd-numbered rounds are shown. Knit the rounds not shown on the chart, and note that round 4 IS shown on the chart. Go on to round 5 after round 4.

In the last round, decrease as shown using a crochet hook and 1 sc. Chain 13 between decreases and connect the last ch13 to the first decrease. Crochet a second round by crocheting one sc into each arch and chaining 14 between the sc stitches.
