Silbersterne

Materials: 350g size 20 crochet thread, 2mm knitting needles.

Instructions: < /br> This tablecloth consists of 8 flower motifs (chart A), an inner part (chart B) and an outer border (charts C-E). Start by making the flower motifs. Cast on 10 stitchs and join into a round, knit two rounds and then follow chart A. The chart is worked 5 times per round. Rounds 13 and 14 are worked in purl. Knit all rounds which are not shown on the chart, except for the purls, which have to be purled again. Where there are double yarnovers, in the next round knit the first loop and purl the second loop. Numbers within the chart denote numbers of knit sts. Rounds 18-32 are knitted the same as round 17. After round 61, loosely cast off the 1st, 3rd and 4th repeats but leave the 2nd and 5th repeats on hold. Work 7 more of these motifs, then graft them by the into a wreath on the 2nd/5th repeats, so that the 1st repeats face the center, and the 3rd and 4th repeats face the outside.

Pick up stitches from the inside of the wreath [8 repeats times 45 stitches = 360]. In the process of picking up stitches, double the number by adding a yarnover after every picked-up stitch [720 stitches] and then follow chart B. Repeat rounds 7 to 20 up to round 133, decreasing the number of stitches per repeat by 2 (i.e., decrease 16 stitches on each pattern round until there are only 8 stitches left in rd 133.See written instructions for these decreases here.) Break yarn, leaving a long tail, thread through the remaining 8 stitches and pull closed, weave in securely.

Pick up 8 times 90 stitches [720 total] from the cast-off stitches at the outside and work charts C, D and E as follows:

  • Work chart C (rounds 1 and 2) 16 times per round.
  • Work chart D next. Purl rounds 3 to 6. From round 7, work the chart 8 times per round.
  • From round 37, work the part outlined in the heavy blue line 7 times per side, then the the remaining stitches in the pattern once to produce the corner. Repeat this 7 more times for the full round. [Creates 8 points around the outside of the tablecloth.]

After round 54 of chart E, gather 5, 4, 3 or 2 sts [as shown above the chart] into 1 sc , working 10 chain sts between them. [Weave in ends, wash and block to an octagonal shape.]
