Rosemarie

Rosemarie is the name of a Herbert Niebling pattern first published in Beyer Band, 288: Kunststricken: Grosse und kleine Decken, Spitzen und Einsätze in 1934. I struggled with the pattern, and finally had to rechart it. In doing so, I found a couple of mistakes that threw the pattern and the stitch count off. So the chart shown in this document is my revised chart, using slightly more modern stitch symbols. I used the program Stitch Mastery to rechart the pattern. I also rewrote the instructions so that they make sense to me. I hope you find this useful!

Size: 145 cm diameter tablecloth, according to the original pattern. That entirely depends on the size of yarn and needles used, and your knitting tension. There is a photo of this pattern on Ravelry.

Material: Mercerized cotton crochet thread, size 10. The original pattern calls for corded crochet thread which I assume refers to a smooth finish, equivalent to mercerized thread. But I could be wrong. Use the yarn that appeals to you and needles that give the type of fabric you like. A smooth-finish yarn, tightly plied, will show up the pattern and detail more. The more halo a yarn has, the more it obscures the pattern. Modern cotton crochet thread, size 10, is suitable for 2.0 to 2.25mm needles. Larger needles will give a more drapey, open fabric. If you use larger yarn, say a fingering weight yarn, use correspondingly larger needles. You might want to knit a swatch or two to find the amount of drape and openness you can achieve with the yarn you want to use.

Instructions: Cast on 6 sts and join in a round, using your choice of double-pointed needles (dpns), flexible dpns or circular needles. Knit the pattern according to Chart A, repeating it 6 times per round. In Rd. 4 knit a total of 11 sts in the 4 YOs from Rd. 3 (alternate purl and knit stitches.) In Rd. 30, knit 13 sts in the 5 YOs from Rd. 29 (alternating purl and knit sts.) Purl Rds. 112-116.

Then knit Chart B, beginning with Rd. 117. Chart B is repeated 25 times in the round. In Rd. 184, knit 13 sts in the 5 YOs from the previous Rd. After Rd. 202, decrease stitches as indicated on Chart B by using a crochet hook to chain them together into one stitch. Chain 13 between the decrease stitches. Cut the yarn or thread, make a knot, and weave in the end. Block as appropriate for the type of yarn or thread used.

Remember:

  • Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
  • I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
  • Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
