Peacock Edging

Peacock Edging is an unusual lace edging. I'm not sure who designed it. I found an interesting doily in a Russian booklet by Eleonora Kristesku, with a kind of wild peacock edging that I thought would make beautiful lace trim. So I charted just the edging (found on the doily on page 48/49.) The designer may be the author, but there are other patterns in this booklet that are unattributed but are clearly by someone like Duchrow or Niebling.

The pattern is a multiple of 18 stitches plus two, one for each edge. Cast on as many multiples of 18 as you need, plus the two extra stitches. Always slip the first stitch of each row, and knit the last stitch. The beginning and ending stitches aren't shown in the chart. I recommend knitting a gauge swatch, so you know how wide each repeat is with your yarn/thread and needles. Then you can calculate how many repeats you need for your lace trim. After row 24 you will bind off with a crochet hook, decreasing as shown and chaining 20 between the decreases. When you block the lace, pull the crochet loops out as far as they will go, to create the wild feathery appearance along the edge.

Remember:

  • Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
  • I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
  • Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
