Nelkenspitze Edging
This is another pretty lace edging by Herbert Niebling. As shown in the original pattern, it is knitted in a circle and sewn to a piece of linen batiste to make a fabric-centered doily. You can see a photo here. There aren't any projects listed there, which is a pity. This would make a nice edge to a shawl, for instance, if you have a multiple of 15 stitches (excluding your border.) Or, make a longer piece of lace for a pillowcase. Knit one repeat with your chosen yarn to measure the width of the repeat. Cast on 15 stitches per repeat, to make the lace as long as you like. The instructions below are meant for making a lace-edged fabric doily approximately 27 cm in diameter with fine thread.
Doilie with a fabric center, total diameter 27 cm, lace width 6 cm, 1 repeat 4 cm if knitted with fine crochet thread, size 100. Material: 10 g crochet thread size 100, knitting needles size 1.5 mm, crochet hook size 0.60 mm, 20 cm X 20 cm square of linen batiste. Of course the sizes will vary depending on the size of thread and needles used. You may need a larger piece of linen fabric, if you use heavier yarn and larger needles.
Instructions: Cast on 180 stitches for 12 repeats, join in a round and knit according to the chart. Knit the repeat 12 times per round. Knit all the intermediate rounds, except that where there are double YOs, knit the first loop and purl the second loop. After the last round decrease with a crochet hook, as indicated in round 29, and chain 12 between decreases.
Finish: Carefully starch and block the lace in a circle. The inside opening should have a diameter of 15 cm if knitted with the fine thread. Measure the opening and draw a circle with the correct diameter on the linen fabric. Sew the lace to the fabric around the circle you have drawn, using many tiny stitches. Turn the fabric over, cut off the excess leaving 1/2 inch seam allowance. Roll the seam allowance over to hide the raw edge and stitch down with tiny stitches. Press lightly.

- Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
- I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
- Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
