An early doily, I believe, designed by Herbert Niebling. It is knit in two parts, first the body, and a crochet edging, then the border is knitted with stitches picked up from the crochet edging. Finally, when the border is complete, another crocheted edging. It is about 8 inches square. The original pattern calls for size 150 crochet thread and size 0/0 knitting needles, both of which are very fine. Obviously, if you use larger thread and needles, the doily will be larger.

Cast on 4 stitches and knit according to chart A. Repeat the pattern 4 times per round. Knit the rounds not shown on the chart, and where there are two yarnovers side by side, knit the first loop and purl the second loop. After round 72 is finished, decrease as shown in the last round, using a crochet hook and single crochet to decrease, followed by 15 chain stitches. Repeat around the entire doily.

Knit 5 stitches into each crochet loop, alternating knit and purl stitches, until there are 380 stitches on the needles. Purl 3 rounds and knit 1 round. Begin following chart B at round 5, and repeat the pattern 20 times per round. Once the 16th round is finished, decrease with a crochet hook as shown in the last round, and chain 15 between decreases.
