Round Doily with Cables
I think this is an unusual Herbert Niebling pattern because of the 8-stitch cables. I don't recall seeing large cables in his patterns like that, although I might be wrong. It doesn't have a name in Kunstricken 476, just a model number, but some folks have called it Pulmonaria. You can see a Ravelry photo here. Or look up "Herbert Niebling Round Doily with Cables" on the Ravelry Patterns page. I also have a scan of a photo and chart identical to the Kunstricken pattern, but it is called Ingrid. Kind of a mystery because I don't know what magazine published Ingrid.
Charts are at the bottom of this page. Right-click on each chart and choose "view image" or whatever choice your browser offers, to see a larger image.
Original description translated from German: "Round tablecloth, as large as desired. Made of fine yarn no. 200 with knitting needles no. 0/0 = 40 cm. large. Made of fine silk with knitting needles No. 1.5 = 80 cm in size. Made of medium silk with knitting needles No. 2.5 = 120 cm in size. Made of thick silk with knitting needles No. 3 = 160 cm in size. "
I don't know whether fine yarn No. 200 is still available, and I don't know if the needle sizes represent measurement in mm or some other sytem. Basically, the finer the yarn and smaller the needles, the smaller the tablecloth will be.
- Cast on 8 stitches and join in a round. In the next round, Kfb in each stitch (16 sts.)
- Rounds 2-4: Knit.
- Round 5: *K1, yo3, k1* Repeat from * to the end of the round.
- Round 6: *K1, k2 into each of the 3 yo loops (make six stitches, in other words), k1.* Repeat to the end of the round.
Continue with Round 7 of the first chart, repeating the pattern 8 times each round. Continue on to the remaining charts. Knit the even-numbered rounds that aren't shown on the charts.
- Notes:
- In Round 113, repeat the two stitches inside the red border 7 times.
- In Rounds 115-169, repeat the stitches inside the blue border 14 times.
- In Rounds 121, 141, and 155, bind off 3 stitches where marked. This creates a hole beneath the cable stitches.
- Rounds 156 and 157 are a bit tricky. On round 156, slip the last 4 stitches of the round without knitting them. Move the end-of-round marker to the right of the four slipped stitches. In Round 157, use the four slipped stitches and the next four stitches to make the 8-stitch cable. Then as you come to the end of each repeat, move the stitch marker four stitches to the right, and knit the next cable. It should be clear when you study these instructions and the chart together.
Remember:
- Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
- I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
- Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
