Helga
A pretty and fairly easy oval doily designed by Herbert Niebling. (Updated charts 7/23/2023.) The original pattern calls for fine rayon and needles size 1. The doily measurements are 19 cm by 32 cm.
Cast on 8 stitches, and close into a round. Follow Chart B (center motif), repeating the pattern 8 times in the round. Knit the unnumbered rounds, and where there are two YOs, on the following round knit the first loop and purl the second loop.
After the 26th round, knit the wings following chart C. Each wing is worked over 21 stitches (3 star tips and 2 intermediate patterns). Since you are knitting the wings flat, purl the even-numbered rounds. Knit one wing, leaving unused stitches on your needles. Then knit the other wing at the opposite side of the circle.
When you have finished both wings, *knit 2 stitches from the single stitch remaining of the second wing. Pick up 23 stitches from the side edge of the same wing, knit the next 9 stitches from the center star, knit 2 sts from the next st (star tip), knit the following 9 stitches, and pick up 23 sts from the side of the next figure. Repeat from the * on the second side. Then knit the border (Chart D).
Bind off with a crochet hook. Decrease as indicated in round 23 with single crochet, and chain 12 after each decrease. Join the last ch12 to the first decrease, cut the thread and tie off. Weave in ends and block according to the type of yarn or thread used.
