FdA 652

Dimensions: 45 cm by 110 cm. Supplies: 100 gr of fine artificial silk special for art knitting or 4 balls of size 30 6-ply crochet thread, and size 1.5 knitting needles.

Instructions: Start by knitting the center according to chart I. Cast on 1 stitch and purl this stitch. Knit rows 1 to 28 back and forth, purl the return rows. After row 28, repeat rows 21 to 28 another 34 times. Then continue with the second part of Chart I, rows 301 to 321. Cut thread, knot and weave in the end.

Read the diagrams from bottom to top and from right to left. The empty gray squares are of no importance and only serve to facilitate understanding the charts. The numbers at the beginning of the diagrams indicate the rounds and the numbers inside the diagrams in pink squares indicate the number of knit stitches to knit.

Edge: Pick up 320 stitches on each long side of the center (chart I) and distribute these stitches as follows (if you are using a set of 5 needles): 1st needle: count 32 stitches from the last stitch of Chart I, place a marker, then pick up 192 stitches on the first needle. 2nd needle: pick up 128 stitches. 3rd needle: pick up 192 stitches. 4th needle: pick up 128 stitches. 640 stitches in total. Knit 4 rounds in the round with the 5th needle. [If you are using a circular needle, pick up 640 stitches, starting at the 32nd stitch from the tip of the doily, and placing markers after the 192nd stitch, after stitch 320, after stitch 412, and after stitch 640 (end of round.) Knit four rounds.]

Knitting the edge: Knit in the round. Knit the rounds not shown on the chart. Where there are two yarnovers, knit the first loop and purl the second loop in the following round. In rounds 1 to 56, Chart II is divided into three parts, Part A, part B and part C. Part A is before the first bold line, part B is between the bold lines and part C is after the second bold line.

Knit 4 repeats (A+B+C} along the long side of the cloth, then one repeat (A+B+B+C) at the end. Repeat on the other side of the cloth. On the 56th round (right side) decrease the remaining stitch in part A by knitting it together with the next stitch, so that there is no more part A or part C. From the 57th round, repeat 12 times in all. From the 107th round, repeat 120 times per round. After the 118th round, bind off with a crochet hook. Combine 5 stitches together with a single crochet and then chain 12 stitches. Repeat until all stitches have been bound off.
