Birke

There are two Niebling patterns called "Birke," this tablecloth and a lace edging. This was published originally in Beyer 228, in 1931. You can see a photo of it here.

This tablecloth is 80 cm in diameter, and requires 100 g crochet thread No. 40, and size 3 knitting needles(old German sizes, perhaps?) Cast on 6 stitches and follow Birke Chart A, repeating the pattern six times each round. All the rounds not shown are knitted; where there are double YOs, on the following round knit the first loop and purl the second loop.

After Round 110, begin following Chart B, repeating the pattern 30 times per round. Note that some even rounds are shown on Chart B, because pattern stitches are required in those rounds for the sake of the pattern. After Round 126, knit one stitch of Round 127 (which moves the beginning of the last round to the left one stitch). Then begin decreasing as shown, with a crochet hook. Crochet 6 stitches between decreases, and join the last ch6 to the first decrease.

To see a larger image, right-click on the chart and choose "view image" or whatever your browser offers. Then you'll be able to see the full-size chart. To download, right-click on the image and choose "save image as." Save it on your computer.

Remember:

  • Feel free to download and use the charts, print copies for your own use. However, you may not print them out and share them with others. Send folks to my website so they can download for themselves.
  • I don't own the original pattern, but I do own my recharted version. So, please don't copy my charts and claim them as your own or publish them under your name. If you want to have your own charts, then find the original patterns and rechart them yourself!
  • Do not sell copies of these charts. If I don't charge for my recharts, you certainly shouldn't charge for my recharts!
